MECHANICAL BAR SCREEN

Domestic wastewater can contain some odd things. Anything that can get down a toilet, and even some things that can’t, end up at the treatment plant. Tin cans, rocks, plastic bottles, bits of lumber, etc. are common. These things can damage pumps and other equipment in the plant. To remove these items from the flow, a mechanically cleaned bar screen is used. It is nothing more complex than a series of steel bars set vertically in the influent channel and spaced 1" apart. Large items are caught on the bars and every 5 to 10 minutes, a chain-driven collector combs the screen and deposits the collected material into a container.
